Dress For Impact – Part I

Proverbs 31:30 tells us “Charm is deceptive, and beauty will not last, but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised.

The most important item we can wear, when we are asked to speak, is our love for Jesus. Devotion to building His Kingdom will be the most impactful item in your spiritual wardrobe.

Knowing this, does our physical appearance matter? Yes! It matters to God, our audience and to us. It isn’t about meeting anyone’s standards, rules or laws. It is about displaying excellence for the Lord in everything we do.

We’ve all heard the term dress for success. That term is fine and indicates that how we dress determines our success. As Christian communicators, I believe we should change that up a bit and use the phrase dress for impact.

To make an impact with our message, our physical appearance must not be distracting. That means that what we are wearing should not be so extreme that our audience can’t look past it. Our comfort is important too. If we are wearing shoes that hurt our feet or a skirt that is too tight, we will be distracted from our presentation.

Dress to fit the venue, culture and your audience.

Are you speaking in a rural area where dress is relaxed? A more casual look may be the answer here. As a speaker, casual doesn’t mean yoga pants or sweats!

We can dress in a “casual chic” fashion. For example dressy jeans, casual slacks, fashionable top, scarf and boots.

In a more formal setting, such as a large conference in a metropolitan area, we should choose attire to match the venue and audience. Here a classic suit or dress with a jacket, or slacks and a blazer are great choices.

Excellence for the Lord is always our goal in our speech, lifestyle, messages and our appearance.
