Where can we find meaningful mentors? Growing up, my grandmother was my mentor. She gave me this great quote that has helped me on my journey in God’s story. “It’s a great life if you don’t weaken,” Grannie said often. Many times when I wanted to give up earning my teaching certificate, becoming a professional speaker, and a writer; I’d say this quote out-loud. It motivated me to keep taking one step at a time until I did become strong in my quest.
Another mentor that helped me at an early stage of my life was a junior high friend. I must confess, we were not friends at first. We were forced to walk to the bus stop together every morning. God does turn the challenges into blessings. Sandy was shy, smart, and the queen of social graces. On the other hand, I was outgoing, a slow-learner, and graceless. Over time we became loyal friends. Sandy coached me in improving my grammar and social skills while I showed her knack of communicating with friendly finesse and sincerity.
These two mentors both were Bible readers and we had heart-to-heart discussions. When I think of these two departed mentors Psalm 133:1 comforts me.
How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! Psalm 133:1
Over the years, my list of mentors have grown long. Some mentors were for short periods in my life while others I am still blessed to have today. Each are gifts from God no matter the length of time we shared.
Presently, my two mentors you may know, Vonda Skelton and Cynthia
Owens. Vonda took me under her wing in 2010 when we began Christian Communicators. She has taught me to share my writings. Mentors see in us what we can’t see in ourselves. A true mentor nudges, pushes, and shoves us forward when we want to stay on familiar ground while another repeatedly shows us a task again and again with pleasant patience. Cynthia has been my tolerant technology teacher. What a blessing these mentors have been. They’re going on the long term list.
However, the Holy Spirit of God has been my mentor since the day I prayed and asked God to let me be His little girl when I was abandoned and rejected. The simple prayer brought Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit into my life. All of us can find the most meaningful mentors in the Holy Trinity. They are loyal, long lasting, and enjoy laughing with us even in our Christian speaking ministry.
Proof: Every Friday, Steve Laube <http://www.stevelaube.com/blog/> sends out a blog post that enlightens the Christian speakers and writers walk with a humorous video or a music video that soothe the soul. His posts have been mentoring me for at least three years. On April 22, 2016, Steve shared a video that had mentoring moments for speakers by Christian speaker, John Brauyan. Enjoy.
May our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who loves us and by His grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word. 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17.
